Faculty St. Mary's School faculty is composed of various religious and lay people. We are composed of a 21 member staff with a 16 to 1 student/staff ratio.
Type of School St. Mary's is a member of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth. There are 18 schools in the diocese.
Accreditation Saint Mary's is a member of the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department. This department is approved by the Texas Education Agency.
Athletics The St. Mary's athletic department provides a well-rounded program in physical development at all grade levels as well as competitive sports at the middle school level. Boys and girls have the opportunity to choose from a variety of sports. The school offers the traditional competitive programs of football, basketball, volleyball and track. Academic eligibility requirement must be met to play on any Mustang team. In addition to athletic competition, St. Mary's offers a cheerleading program for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
Activities and Extra-curricular Opportunities St. Mary's School students have various opportunities to participate in community service projects through the parish youth ministry program. There are active Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts programs and many children have access to various special activities such as the annual Christmas float, School play productions, Forgotten Angels, Littlest Angels, VISTO and Christian Children's Fund. Community service hours are required for Jr. High religion programs.
Admission Requirements St. Mary's School requires a review of academic transcripts, proper immunization records and personal interview. All new students are seen by appointment only. Please schedule your meeting through the school office at 940/665-5395 ext 3.
After School Services St. Mary's students are eligible to participate in an after school service provided for tutorial help, homework or reading. This service is available at a nominal fee for parents who have schedule problems and are unable to pick up their students immediately after school.
Academic Achievements St. Mary's students score well above the national average on the Stanford Achievement Test. St. Mary's 7th grade students regularly have representatives participating in the Duke University Identification Search, which recognizes students who have scored above the 95th percentile in a variety of academic competitions, including spelling, geography, science fair, Bible and speech. The school has expanded its level of academic competition through participation in the North Texas Independent League, with member schools including St. Mary's, Sivells Bend, Walnut Bend, Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart and Denton Calvary. In 2006 SMS also joined the Private School Interscholastic Association which includes the opportunity to compete in various academic events including One Act Play, speaking events and many others.
Background St. Mary's School is the oldest continuous Catholic School in North Central Texas, founded by Father Pierre Levy in 1891 following his founding of St. Mary's Parish in 1879. The School Sisters of Notre Dame began service to the school in 1902. The elementary school was built in 1948 and has undergone major, renovation and expansion in 1978 and 1984. A new Centennial Center was built and dedicated in 1991, the same year St. Mary's School celebrated its 100th anniversary of existence.
Facilities Facilities include a spacious Centennial Center, which includes a gymnasium, indoor walking track and a mezzanine area which is used for a variety of functions such as a meeting place, concession stand and fellowship area. The school has a newly renovated 25-station computer lab that serves all grade levels, a library equipped with 4 computer workstations for a reading series, science lab, academic classrooms, a cafeteria and commons area and playground. The Early Learning Center wing includes academic classrooms and a second computer lab with 26 computers. The school is located across the street from St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Pastoral Center and Rectory.
Enrollment There are approximately 160 students in grades K3 through eighth. From its inception in 1891, St. Mary's has welcomed any student who is academically qualified, regardless of racial, economic, religious, sociological or ethnic background. Although the majority of the student body is Catholic, about 35% belong to other denominations.
